Two Gays in the Garden is a podcast that invites you to follow along as Isa (she/her) and Ro (they/them) turn their small yard into the beautiful garden space of their dreams. Lofty ideas, far too many seeds and a small element of limit testing with their landlord, Sue, swiftly commence - starting episode 1. Logistics, Baby! #Planning, #Purchasing and #Prepping
Isa loses her mind as she pours packets after packets of Baker Creek seeds onto the table. Particularly enchanted by the many flowers, she paints a word image of their colors.
Ro can't remember the details however is rather stoked about a gigantic sunflower variety. The #giantmongolaiansunflower will measure up to 14ft tall and have a head of approximately 16". Luckily the seeds are edible.
Along with the flowers, they aim to grow 4 varieties of tomatoes as well as carrots, squash, bell peppers and jalapenos. A special star in the garden will be a Tennis Ball Lettuce which, nearly exclusively, will be planted to caters to Isa's rogue backyard bunny.
The setup to grow everything consists of recycled fruit containers, some grow lights, heat mats and a $30 greenhouse.
Containers of most sizes can be salvaged from recycling bins, cleaned, prepped and used for seedlings. Strawberry containers and cupcake containers are particularly popular with these two hosts. The strawberry container is perfect due to its depth, built-in drainage holes and lid. This lends it to be a mini green house. Cupcake containers are nice and sturdy, however need to be perforated. Be careful not to get cut by the sharp plastic edges. Once that step is completed it will be easy to plant and then later replant the perfectly portioned seedlings.
A #warning regarding egg cartons. Rumor has it that you can merely seed plants in egg cartons and then drop the cartons directly into the soil. However, some gardeners find that this is not quite true. Sturdy root systems such as those of tomato plants do well with this method. However fine, more sensitive root systems such as those of peppers will have a harder time breaking through the material. Egg cartons in general are a good tool but use with caution or you will find yourself trying to pry tiny roots out of them; shedding a tear with each bit that rips off or gets trapped.
The greenhouse was a lucky find on a local gardening group. In general, plants and a lot of equipment can be found on facebook marketplace, garage sales or local groups.
