First Leaf and Watering

On this episode of Two Gays in the Garden both Isa and Ro have kicked their respective illnesses and inspect the plant babies for the first set of "real leaves." They also live through the great massacre of Carrot Kingdom caused by a one-day drought.

When sprouting from seed the first sign of success is a little set of leaves. We love them as they bring sun to the plant and allow it to grow further. However, they are also little chlorophyll-filled agents of deception.

Their deceit is revealed when the first "real leaves" that show what the plant will actually look like grow. The first leaves will acknowledge that the jig is up, and fall to the ground, defeated. New gardeners often interpret this as a sign that the plant is dying. Rude and disorienting as it may be, it is the way it goes with these small leaves. They will fall off when they are no longer needed which does not indicate that you are doing anything wrong.

The great drought, which lasted less than 24 hours, has ravaged the lands and most significantly affected Carrot Kingdom. To err is human, and sometimes erring humans forget to water for a little less than 24 hours, ok! The thin little plants lay flat on the dry ground without much hope of recovery. Luckily, several of them pulled through allowing us to replant them with a bit more space. It was gruesome however as the dead plants were stuck to the living and made everything a lot harder.

Eventually however we got the job done and ended up with 3 containers of nicely spaced carrot plants.

What did we learn? When you raise from seed thou shall NOT forget to water - even for a single day.

If you want to hear about grocery store garlic sprouting and how many more flower seeds Isa has smoothly added to the collection, give us a listen on Episode 3! You can also see our plants and projects on Instagram which you find on the home page of this blog.

Happy Gardening!
